ATLANTA, Ga. - Each year, dozens of children across the country die after they are left in hot cars. The majority of the time these deaths can be prevented, experts say.
Pediatrician Dr. Jennifer Shu says in no time at all, a car with the windows rolled up can become dangerously hot. Dr. Shu children feel the effects of the heat much quicker than adults.
Dr. Shu says when left in a hot car too long, a baby begins to suffer heat exhaustion. She said the baby can get weak, fatigued, dizzy, and their heart can stop at about 107 degrees.
Dr. Shu recommends that parents leave a toy or stuffed animal in the front seat of their car to remind them that their child is in the back seat. She says any small reminder can help prevent a horrible accident.
