Last week, Georgia House Speaker Glenn Richardson announced he was suffering from depression so powerful he attempted suicide. One Cobb County woman said she knew what that was like. Pat Kramer said she has been struggling with depression for 40 years.

Kramer said she was grateful that Richardson went public with his battle with depression.

Kramer said she does her best to focus on the things she enjoys, like making jewelry, but sometimes it's difficult, just to get through the day.

"I have tried so many medications, I've had something in my chest that didn't work called a Vagus Nerve Stimulator. I've had electric shock. I've taken probably every drug imaginable," said Kramer. "For some people it's not just your attitude. For some people you can't just switch and be up. Because the depression can be so, you know, debilitating."

On Friday, Richardson made the surprising revelation that he has struggled with depression and even tried to end his own life.

Richardson released a statement saying he has struggled with depression over the last two and a half years since his divorce. Richardson said he has received help and support and medical intervention.

The Georgia House Speaker said he was ashamed and embarrassed, but encouraged anyone who knows someone struggling with depression, to reach out to them.

Kramer said she is glad Richardson decided to go public with his battle with depression.

"Mental illness is a very, very, very, very serious thing and it needs attention, and it needs more money, and it needs more research," said Kramer.
