ATLANTA - Scattered thunderstorms hit north and central Georgia Wednesday. They are expected to continue through the afternoon and evening, said the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible across portions of central Georgia, said the NWS. The primary hazard from thunderstorms will be frequent lightning and damaging winds. Some small hail will also be possible.

A flash flood warning is in effect for several counties in northeast georgia.

Radar estimates that 6 to 9 inches of rain fell earlier Wednesday over a small portion of extreme southern Towns County, southeast of Mountain Scene.

The Hiawassee River south of Hiawassee had rapidly risen to 8.9 feet as of 930 am. Flood stage is 10 feet. Corbin Creek, High Shoals Creek, and the Hiawassee River near the Tray Mountain Wilderness just southeast of Mountain Scene and east of Highway 75 likely saw sharp rises.

Most flood related deaths occur in automobiles. Do not attempt to Cross water covered bridges, dips, or low water crossings. To escape rising water, move up to higher ground. Streams, rivers or creeks can become killers in heavy rains. Campers and hikers should avoid streams or creeks.
