Super cells of lightning and hail pounded parts of north Georgia Thursday night. Severe thunderstorms pummeled Metro Atlanta with hail and dangerous lighting. The weather was severe enough to bring travel at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to standstill with no flights going in or out.
The radar showed even more weather headed into to the Metro area Thursday night.
The severe weather was to blame for shutting down parts of Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. The airport was forced to evacuate when lighting struck the tower.
FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the workers were evacuated at 8:49 p.m. after a smoky odor was detected in the tower during a thunderstorm. Bergen said arrivals and departures had already been suspended because of the storm and accompanying wind shear.
Runway lights were also affected by the storm. Flights in and out of the airport were grounded.
