The decision by Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle to drop out of the Georgia governor's race created a large ripple effect Thursday. Several prominent state Republicans were said to be actively considering the GOP primary contest.
Cagle announced he was dropping his bid for governor on Wednesday. The surprise move immediately scrambled the crowded race to replace Sonny Perdue in 2010.
At a news conference Wednesday, Cagle said he dropped his bid because nerve damage to his neck and spinal cord required surgery.
Surrounded by his wife and three sons, Cagle choked up several times as he made the announcement.
The 43-year-old Gainesville man was considered a strong contender to win the Republican nomination for governor next summer. Cagle's departure leaves three Republicans still in the race: Secretary of State Karen Handel, Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine and state Rep. Austin Scott of Tifton.
Cagle was elected lieutenant governor in 2006 after 12 years in the state Senate. Cagle said he will run again for lieutenant governor.
The field of candidates running for governor are Karen Handel (R), Ray McBerry (R), John Oxendine (R), Austin Scott (R), Thurbert Baker (D), David Poythress (D), DuBose Porter (D), and John Monds (L).
