ATLANTA (MyFOX ATLANTA) - When it comes to matching someone's DNA to a crime, can FOX 5 employees be considered suspects? On Monday, the FOX 5 I-Team did a story about a man convicted of rape in part, because of DNA evidence - even though he wasn't a match.
When there are multiple suspects, the GBI crime lab doesn't exclude anyone who has even a single genetic match.
Senior I-team reporter Dale Russell wanted to know how common is it to match DNA evidence, so he put FOX 5 employees to the test.
GBI scientists said they weren't surprised some FOX 5 employees matched some of the DNA evidence, because people share many common genetic markers.
Scientists say, if they see data then they have to report it and not exclude anyone who matches up. Since the GBI is often comparing incomplete profiles, other DNA experts say at the least, the evidence is inconclusive.
