ATLANTA (MyFOX ATLANTA) - It may feel like summer, but with an increase in illnesses it feels more like the middle of winter. Doctors say they are seeing an increase in both the flu and viral infections in children.

Dr. Carolyn McKay has nearly 40 years of experience and she said she has never seen flu or flu-like symptoms this prevalent this late in the season.

Dr. McKay said the illness seems to be contained to children.

The doctor advises that children need to be fever free for at least 24 hours before resuming contact with other children.

Dr. McKay also warns that if using acetaminophen to control a child's fever, be cautious because it can give the false sense that the fever is truly gone.
