CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. (MyFOX ATLANTA) - A Clayton County father testified Thursday that he ignored his children's cries of hunger and instead stayed in bed taking drugs. The man and the infant's mother faces charges including cruelty to children, and forgery of prescriptions.
James McCart III of Lovejoy testified on Thursday at the trial of 25-year-old Tessa Zelek in Clayton County Superior Court.
The 25-year-old McCart told the jury that the couple would print out phony prescriptions, different doctors’ signatures and get the prescriptions filled.
Doctors testified Wednesday that the boys were so malnourished that their brains had shrunk and they could barely move. They said the children had no teeth and their skin was hanging from their bodies.
Prosecutors say the babies weighed nine pounds each, 20 to 30 pounds under weight, when the couple was arrested two years ago.
