COBB COUNTY, Ga. (MyFOX ATLANTA) - The July 4 holiday weekend turned tragic for one Kennesaw family. Cobb County police said a 5-month-old infant was murdered. The suspect in the homicide is an adolescent family member.
According to investigators, police were called to a car on Dallas Highway in Marietta on July 4 for reports of an unresponsive child.
When officers arrived on the scene they said they found a 5-week-old female infant, the baby's mother and a 12- year-old male cousin.
The infant was not breathing and was immediately transported to Kennestone Hospital and later transferred to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston Hospital. The next day, the infant was taken off life-support and pronounced dead.
On Monday, July 6, 2009 the Cobb County Medical Examiners Office conducted an autopsy and concluded that the infant died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head.
As a result, the Crimes Against Children Unit charged the 12-year-old male cousin with felony murder and cruelty to children.
The 12-year-old boy was being held at the Cobb County Juvenile Facility Tuesday. There has been no determination whether he will be charged as an adult.
