Gerry Boylan is now a managing director of a private equity firm in Michigan, but in the 1970's he logged nearly 100,000 miles hitchhiking through the country.
Although it's almost unheard of these days - hitchhiking used to be a fairly commonplace way of getting around for free.
His new novel - Getting There - uses his experience as the basis of the story of a man caught between two distinct periods of his life.
